Since Disney started offering its vast library and new original content on its own streaming platform, Netflix has gained a competitor that can really compete for the world leadership in the sector. Supported by exclusive attractions of popular franchises, such as The Mandalorian, in Star Wars; it’s from WandaVision, from Marvel Studios, Disney + is gradually understanding its audience better and distributing its titles appropriately – such as the Star service, which aggregates films and series aimed at adult audiences.
And, although it still doesn’t have as dynamic and regionalized an interface as Netflix, Disney + has grown a lot, both in popularity and in number of payers. According to the executive director of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Chapek, the company’s initial projection was to reach 90 million monthly users by 2024. And the goal was reached even before the end of 2020, with a total of 94.9 million users. subscribers – that is, just 13 months after its launch.
Chapek said it surprised all executives, including himself. “What we didn’t realize was the unfamiliar appeal that a service like Disney Plus would have. In fact, more than 50% of our global market [de assinantes] do not have children; and that’s the big difference, “he revealed during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference.
“When 50% of [assinantes do] Disney + have no children, you really have the opportunity now to think much more widely about the nature of your content, “he continued, without giving details on what this could mean for Disney’s” family “tradition. We could have all the adult titles , like Logan and Deadpool, in the same catalog in the future? Or see the studios daring more in their themes? These questions remain in the air.
Given this success, analysts are now more confident in the long-term prospects for Disney +. And the whole market is confident that the platform will really shake the leadership of Netflix in a short time: an analysis by Digital TV Research, published last month, predicts that Disney + will surpass Netflix in 2026, with a projection of 294 million subscribers by then – Netflix is expected to accumulate 286 million monthly active users in the same period.
Well, if it depends on the next attractions, it may be that this trend continues. In the coming months, Disney + will have series launches awaited, such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki, from Marvel; and Boba Fett’s Book, in Star Wars; in addition to hybrid premieres of films such as Black Widow, Raya and the Dragon, The Eternals, among others.
