Allen Against Farrow | HBO Go releases controversial documentary and Woody Allen responds

HBO Brasil released the official trailer for the documentary series Allen Against Farrow, which rekindles the controversial story of former couple Woody Allen and Mia Farrow. “A Hollywood scandal. A family tragedy,” says the trailer’s description, superficially indicating the direction the story should take in the course of the four episodes.

Allen Against Farrow it offers “a look”, as the synopsis indicates. Indicating the report as a point of view is a great strategy, since the old controversy returned with the breath taken for another round from the release of the documentary. The official synopsis says that Allen Against Farrow will show “a look behind the years of hyped headlines to reveal the private history of the sexual abuse charge against Woody Allen involving his 7-year-old daughter with Mia Farrow.”

The trailer arrived the day before the first episode was released, February 21, which means that the first episode of Allen Against Farrow is now available for streaming on HBO Go. The next three episodes will be released weekly on February 28, March 7 and 12.

Again with a theme involving child abuse, Allen Against Farrow is already seen with suspicious glances by those who followed the developments of another controversial original HBO documentary, the least controversial Leaving Neverland.

Woody Allen’s response

Variety released the press release by Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn (Allen’s wife and Farrow’s adopted daughter) through a spokesperson. According to the publication, Allen and Previn claim that filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering had “no interest in the truth”. In addition, the couple accused the duo of directors of “stealthily collaborating” with the Farrows to do a job “riddled with falsehoods.”

The documentary sounds quite partial in the sense that it has only statements from the Farrows. However, according to producer Amy Herdy’s statement to Variety, this was not intentional, but only a consequence. Herdy claims to have tried to contact Allen since June 2018, and although Allen’s assistant said emails were being forwarded, she never got a response, so the documentary had to be made without the accused’s eyes.

In the statement, the spokesman tells a different story. “Woody and Soon-Yi were approached less than two months ago and were given just a few days ‘to answer’,” he explains. “Of course they refused to answer.” The statement ends with the following statement:

As has been known for decades, these claims are categorically false. Several agencies investigated them at the time and found that, despite everything Dylan Farrow may have been led to believe, absolutely no abuse had occurred. Unfortunately, it is not surprising that the network that will broadcast this is HBO – which has a production and commercial relationship agreement with Ronan Farrow. While this low-quality information may attract attention, it does not change the facts.

Recently, HBO also released the poster for Allen Against Farrow, where we can see the title of the documentary written with a font that, if not the same, closely resembles the characteristic typography of Woody Allen’s films:
